Dyson DC17 Asthma & Allergy Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC17 Asthma & Allergy Upright Vacuum CleanerJust purchased the DC 17 allergy and asthma today. Have done a lot of research over the last week and read many reviews. I really wanted a good vacuum I can depend on; I have 6 kids and vacuum daily! Best I can tell each model has the same amount of suction, they just have different options in color, filter placement/type and attachments. I was set on the DC14 model but this was on sale for a great price and had a few more attachments I felt I would really use. So far I am pleased. It appears to pick up as expected, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of junk in the canister and my carpets feel cleaner. This is very easy to maneuver; I see no need for the more expensive ball model, unless you will use all the fancy attachments. All the full size Dyson's felt heavy to me in the store, so I was concerned with getting it up and down the stairs, but in comparison to Hoover etc. they all seem to be about the same weight and hey we could all use a good workout. I find no issues with pushing it around, it moves with great ease and transitions surfaces flawlessly. Turning the beater off to move from carpet to solid floors is a breeze and the feature works wonderfully, just a touch of an easy to reach button. The attachments fit on firmly and do not fall off. The wand will take some getting use to as it is solid for about 18+" and I am use to the hose being flexible at the base. I don't have to bend as much using it though so my back is happy! The hose is very easy to remove for use, just cannot use it for quick pick-ups until you unwind the entire plug, so one minor downfall. It states there is a 5 year warranty, I did not read what all that covers, I will just be relieved to have a vacuum last more than a year with the beating I give them. It is important as with ALL canister vacuums that you tap or wipe out the excess dust from the chamber weekly. I have had many canister vacuums and learned early on to do this often to keep the fine dust from building up or you will loose suction. The filter is easy to remove and clean by running under tap water, so will save on replacement filters in the future! Overall I am happy; we will see how I feel at the 6 mo. And 1 yr. mark. But no regrets today. The only negative I can agree with that I have seen over the last week is the not being able to remove the wand without unwinding the entire cord.

Dyson DC15 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC15 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum CleanerI have a Katrina survivor dog that I adopted that can simply be described as a "hair machine."Minutes after vacuuming with my old vac, I'd still see "hair tumbleweeds" here and there.I knew I had to do something, so I ordered the Dyson DC-15.It arrived one day before I arrived at home, and my wife opened it and used it."That new vacuum is amazing!," she said.I figured "amazing" meant "better than the old one."I took it into a carpeted room that she hadn't vacuumed yet, turned it on, and watched in amazement when after about 3 linear feet of movement produced a swirling hairball in the collector. At first I thought it must be residual hair from where she had used it earlier. This was NOT a section of the floor where I could even SEE any hair. The floor looked relatively clean when I started. So, I emptied the collector and started over.Same thing.Incredible! And not just hair, but dirt!

After about 3 weeks with this "Animal," I'm sold.Easy to empty, and every day it does it's thing -- never ceasing to amaze me.I use it daily, and the entire house smells cleaner than it did.

The attachments are nice -- I don't use the mini-turbine head, although I may later. The extension wand makes it easy to get under furniture with as little as 2" clearance (maybe even less).I have a kitchen island that weighs about 400 pounds that I used to have to move to clean underneath (it's on rollers). Now I just vacuum under it.The cool thing about the tools is that everything you need is on the vacuum... including the hose -- but unlike a lot of vacs (like my old Electrolux), you don't have to stop the vac, pull out a hose, attach it to the machine, and revert to upright later. The hose is already attached. You just pull the wand up, press a button, and you've got all you need to get under furniture. This part of the machine is truly a clever design.

This thing has tons of suction, too.Very impressive!

Here are the "cons" to the unit:
1) The hard plastic used on the collector seems like it might be easily broken -- although this hasn't happened yet.I'm not thinking "shatter" here, more like the latch might break. The jury's still out on this one.

2) The manual could have been better.I read.I don't appreciate the "diagram-only" approach to some of the instructions.

That's it, though... and the second one is minor.

Everything else is a "go" on this machine.Get one and you'll see what I mean.

Another thing... some of the reviews I've read complain about the "high pitched whine" or the color of the machine. The machine is pretty quiet.Much quieter than my old Electrolux, but it is A POWERFUL VACUUM and therefore will sound like a vacuum cleaner running!;)And the color?Where do you keep this thing, in a display case?My advice? If you don't like the color, take it to a body shop and let 'em paint it for you -- but don't let the color cause you to miss what I consider to be one of the best deals going in the vacuum cleaner market.

Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister Vacuum Review

Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister VacuumI have to admit I was skeptical at first because of the lukewarm "professional" reviews of Dyson in general, but now I'm a true convert.I LOVE this vacuum (coming from someone that HATES housecleaning).

Pros
--Canister style vacuum-great for those of us with back problems that can't push around a heavy upright for long.
--Suction power-WONDERFUL suction on this thing.
--Power brushes-stiff bristles "refresh" the carpet and can easily be turned off by foot controls (no bending down).
--Maneuverability-this has a ball style joint that makes it extremely maneuverable.
--Compact storage-it wraps around itself and is light enough to easily pick up and carry.
--No filters or belts to replace-just clean the built-in filter every 6 months with tap water.
--Quiet!-this is the quietest vacuum I've ever used.
--Retractable cord-guess this is standard on most canisters, but as a former upright user this is a nice feature to me.
--Low profile vacuum head-makes it easier to get under the couches, beds, etc.
--No bags to buy...ever!
--5 Year Warranty

Cons
--No headlight-funny I didn't realize how dark some of my corners are.
--Using attachments is a little awkward because of the larger, inflexible handle, but I imagine I'll get used to it.
--Short power cord-could definitely use a few more feet, but I suspect this was as long as they could fit into the compact unit.
--Power brushes-just a warning here, they're not for delicate carpets. They're rather stiff compared to most and I imagine could do some damage to older/thinner rugs.
--Small collection bin-available volume seems small due to the compact design, but it's EASY to empty, so not really a big problem.
--Price-it's not cheap, but I did find a 20% off coupon on-line for another store so saved $100.

There are enough cons that I can't give this vacuum 5 stars, but none of them are serious enough in my opinion to be major detractors.I'm definitely happy with my purchase.

From the Manufacturer

Dyson's Stowaway canister vacuum is ideal for those who want the convenience and store-ability of a canister but also want a floor-cleaning machine that doesn't lose suction. It easily wraps to store away, as the hose and wand collapse and wrap for storing purposes. Because of its motorized cleaner head, the Stowaway provides an effortless steering experience, making it easy to maneuver and clean in tight spaces. It has a foot operated brush control, so you can operate it without bending down, and a clear polycarbonate bin that lets you see when it's ready to empty.

Dyson Stowaway: The Only Canister that Doesn't Lose Suction

The Stowaway canister vacuum utilizes Dyson's renowned Root12Cyclone technology. The Dyson cyclone spins air at high speed, so dirt and dust are thrown out of the airflow and collected in the bin, not on filters or bags. Unlike other vacuums, a Dyson doesn't clog and lose suction, so it picks up more dirt. Also, the vacuum's motorized brushbar has powerful bristles which remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, and it has no belt to replace. The Stowaway is very hygienic--its clean expelled exhaust air has up to 150 times less bacteria and mold than air you breathe. Lifetime HEPA filtration is another way that this vacuum keeps things clean (it's been approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation). The extra cleaning tools are stored board for simple and rapid access, and, for easier cleaning in confined areas like cars, the tools can be fitted directly to the end of the wand. The Dyson Stowaway also boasts a durable, tough construction--it's made from ABS and polycarbonate, materials used to manufacture crash helmets.

What Makes Dyson Different

Bags Clog Suction

When the vacuum cleaner is empty, clean air flows into the machine and out through the pores of the bag. However as soon as you start to use the machine the bag starts to fill with dust and debris. The bag acts as a filter and the machine starts to lose suction. This is because the pores of the bag begin to clog with the dust that the machine has picked up. This restricts the airflow which causes loss of suction power.

Other Bagless Systems Clog like Bags

When the vacuum cleaner is new, clean air flows through the container and out through the filters.
However as soon as you start to use the machine the container starts to fill with dust and debris. The filters clog, and the machine starts to lose suction.
This is because the surface of the filter becomes blocked with dust, restricting the airflow which causes a loss of suction power.

Only Dyson Doesn't Lose Suction
Dyson Root Cyclone technology uses 200,000G of centrifugal force in the cyclones to filter dust and remove dirt from the airflow efficiently. Because there is nothing to obstruct the airflow, it doesn't clog and doesn't lose suction. Dyson proves no loss of suction claim using the IEC 60312 Cl 2.9 test standard.

Dyson has the Most Advanced Cyclone Technology

Powerful suction spins out larger dirt and debris. The shroud filters out fluff and lint. Centrifugal forces spin out the tiny harmful particles. Cleaner air is expelled into your home.
The Dyson Story
James Dyson

You know the feeling when some everyday product lets you down. You wish someone could solve the problem. James Dyson does that. He is a man who likes to make things work better. With his research team he has developed products that have achieved sales of over $10 billion worldwide.

The Bag Problem
In 1978, while vacuuming his home, James Dyson realized his bag vacuum cleaner was constantly losing suction power. He noticed how dust quickly clogged the pores of the bag and blocked the airflow, so that suction dropped rapidly. He set to work to solve this problem. 5 years and 5,127 prototypes later, the world's first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner arrived.

No Place for New Technology
James Dyson offered his invention to major manufacturers. One by one they turned him down, apparently not interested in new technology. They seemed determined to continue selling bags, worth $500 million every year. Later, Hoover's Vice President for Europe, Mike Rutter, said on UK national TV: "I do regret that Hoover as a company did not take the product technology off Dyson; it would have lain on the shelf and not been used".

Dyson DC17 All Floors Review

Dyson DC17 All FloorsHOLY COW is all I could say after using it for the first time. The amount of "stuff" that came out of our carpets was astonishing.I also feel like I got a great deal on it, on sale for $299 at best buy. That was about the maximum of my price threshold having never seen one in action.Well let me tell you at $499 it would have been a good deal based on how much suction power this thing has.I feel so fortunate to have gotten one for such a good price.

After reading some reviews and product comparisons I decided on the DC17. We needed a new vacuum as our old one was around 8 years old and a lately it seemed to suck at sucking. We have 2 kids and a Labrador Retriever who are constantly tracking dirt and such into the house as well as the animal hair and dander...OMG the amount of hair and dander was astonishing...the carpets after one vacuuming were noticeably cleaner and looked to my wife and I as if they had been steam cleaned.

The only problem with getting this vacuum is that we are now aware of the filth that was residing unseen in our carpets for all those years and the shame that accompanies it is almost unbearable...but persevere we must!!

One note that I read elsewhere and again in the documentation was not to use carpet fresh powder or things like it.

Dyson Air Multiplier? table fan - 10" white Review

Dyson Air Multiplier table fan - 10' whiteWe were attracted to this fan due to its "cool" factor and it performs as advertised. However for its commanding price, it could use some improvements such as:

The silver coating on the 12" model looks like cheap plastic. We exchanged ours for the 10" model in gloss white and it presented a significantly more refined appearance.
We purchased the Dyson to replace a standard table fan in a mini-home theater room to reduce the noise level. Sadly, the Dyson, due to its high speed internal turbo motor, was noticeably louder than the fan it was to replace. We kept it anyhow but for a different application.
For the money, a simple remote control would have been a welcome addition.
The variable speed control is a nice touch but its range seems limited to "medium" on its lowest setting, reducing its usefulness for close-up gentle (and quiet) cooling (in our instance, sharing a computer table).

That said, it it does move a lot of air, looks great and it a no-brainer for anyone with small children.

Dyson DC18 Slim All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC18 Slim All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum CleanerVacuums often disappoint. They're either unwieldy in size, take too much work to change out longer hoses or put on attachments, etc., need costly bags, or they're heavy or take up too much storage space. And, lastly, they frequently don't live up to performance standards. Well, the Dyson Slim delivers in all but one small category.

As the Cleaning Editor for BellaOnline, I look at cleaning equipment with a serious eye. The first thing I noticed about my Dyson Slim is that performance-wise, it delivers, pulling up cup-full after cup-full of hair, dust, and everything else you find in carpets -- even the ones I had just vacuumed with my regular vacuum (I had to perform a quick "quality assurance" test).

The Dyson Slim also delivers in several other categories, such as storage (it takes 1/3 less space than a regular vacuum), and ease of use. It has the "flick of the wrist" action of the Dyson Ball without the massive weight of the Dyson Ball. This is important to me because I broke my wrist last year and had neck surgery in February. I need a vacuum that I don't have to muscle around the house and that torques my wrist and lower back.

Another spot where it delivers is the size of the vacuum head. It's not as wide as regular vacuums and I was reluctant to buy it because a wider head means more coverage; or so I thought. Actually, the shorter vacuum head, combined with the low profile, means the vacuum gets into very small spaces and underneath sofa skirts, etc., easily and more proficiently than a standard-sized vacuum, helping you to vacuum more quickly and with greater agility.

Where didn't it perform? The attachment heads were a disappointment. There's not a good-sized brush or wide head attachment. The attachments seemed a little cheap and overlooked -- with one exception. The crevice tool/brush combination it comes with is absolutely perfect for vacuuming baseboards (Halleluiah!). But, I also find that I need a nice-sized brush for areas like wood shutters and a wide head attachment to do places such as stairs and tiled areas. However, you can always buy the Dyson wide attachment ($50) and brush separately. Or, I just bought the Kenmore brand attachments that fit the Dyson perfectly. The wide head was only $9.99 -- and it fits in the slot for the Dyson attachments on the vacuum body.

For a vacuum that's easy to maneuver, easy to clean and maintain, takes up less space and gives all the power of a regular-sized Dyson vacuum, the Dyson Slim is a hands-down winner. The only drawback in my mind (better attachments) was no problem because I found an inexpensive work-around. Besides, I'd rather have an easy-to-use vacuum that works well and has chintzy attachments than great attachments on a so-so vacuum. I'd recommend this vacuum to anyone, especially if you want all the power at half the size.

Dyson DC16 Animal Handheld Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC16 Animal Handheld Vacuum CleanerWe have two small dogs, three cats, three litter boxes, and three bedrooms with carpet. Everything else is hard wood.

I read the reviews here with caution, and debated long before purchasing this product. I looked at what I would be using it for, and didn't think I would need it for much more than six minutes at a time. We also have the Dyson Animal Upright vacuum, so for anything that would require more than six minutes of work, it's not a hassle to haul the big guy out. (And whoa - does that work! Wow.)

Two of the litter boxes are in my "office" (one of the carpeted bedrooms), so I keep this little guy in here, plugged in next to one of the boxes. Every so often, I use it for about a minute to vacuum up any stray crystals, whether they are near the box or elsewhere in the office. When I notice that the hallways have some dust/cat hair building up along the edges, I use this little guy for about thirty seconds and with the crevice tool and the hallways are dust free. The suction is so powerful that you finish your task in what seems like 1/10 of the time if you were using a Dust Buster instead. Same goes for other areas of the apartment. If I see a little dust in the corner, I bring out the little guy. I think that I've used it about one hundred times since purchasing it a month ago, and love it. Couldn't be happier. And the apartment is a lot cleaner. Knowing that I don't have to haul out the larger unit with the cord that needs to be unwrapped, plugged in, then wrapped up when finished, motivates me to be more proactive. (I need a nudge in that direction when it comes to cleaning.)

No other portable/cordless has the power that this has, and the turbo brush on the Dyson (on all Dysons) actually works, whereas every so-called turbo brush I've encountered on lesser vacuum cleaners (Hoover and Bissell) never did. The turbo brush spins powerfully, the suction is fantastic, and it picks up EVERYTHING. Well, not as much of EVERYTHING as the upright, but this little guy blew me away.

The other nice thing about it is that many of the other Dyson attachments (that I bought in addition to what came with the upright) fit this product, making it that much more versatile.

It's expensive, but if I accidentally drop kicked it off the porch tomorrow and it shattered on the cement below, I'd buy a new one immediately. (Of course, I don't plan on drop kicking it any time in the near future.)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR PET OWNERS.

Dyson Mattress Tool Review

Dyson Mattress ToolThe Mattress Tool is the most used tool from my Dyson DC14 Animal Upright Vacuum collection.I inherited a cat who assumes my queen size bed is hers.I use this tool on the mattress, mattress pad, feather bed, sheets (while still on the bed), pillow cases (left on the pillows),pillows and my beloved quilts and shams (easiest to clean while left on bed).It really saves time and my washer and dryer.I used to double and triple wash to get rid of the cat hair and have to clean hair out of the washer each time.I even use it on clothing (I put them on a hanger and hold the bottom down while gliding the tool downward).I also have a 12 yr. old German Shepherd who sheds a lot.I use the Mini Turbine Head to clean her super-sized bed and twin-sized sheets (easiest while still on bed).I also have the Low Reach Floor Tool.Fantastic for getting pet hair from under my heavy furniture.I've owned a lot of vacuums and Dyson is by far the best out there for pet owners.I use all of the tools and they are great.I hardly ever used the tools on my other uprights because they didn't seem to get enough suction to do the job right. After 12 years of struggling to keep up with all of the pet hair now I can get the job done in no time and the results are a truly clean house.I've actually reversed the damage to my carpets from embedded pet hair.Dyson is powerful enough to pull out the pet hair.Another good point,Dyson is the cleanest vacuum to use.No spilled dirt while emptying the dirt bin (like my other two bagless vacuums) and no nasty filters to wash every time you vacuum. How good can it possibly get?!!
